European Parliament Takes Stand on Health Hazards of Wireless Technologies

The European Parliament’s Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety recently voted overwhelmingly to recommend precautions be taken to protect human health with regard to wireless technologies, such as mobile phones, Wi-Fi/Wi-Max, Bluetooth, DECT portable phones and c
ell towers. Key recommendations are summarized below:
* Increased communication about the potential health hazards of wireless technologies, and funding for a ‘wide ranging’ awareness campaign aimed at young people;
* A review of the scientific basis and adequacy of present exposure guidelines, long called into question by independent scientists;
* That certain establishments be kept free of wireless radiation, including schools, day care centers, retirement homes and health care institutions;
* That an assessment be conducted of the ‘compatibility’ of artificial fields with the human body, as well as increased R&D spending to access the long? term health effects;
* That the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies (EGE) be given the additional task of assessing scientific integrity of studies in this field due to the ethical issues that have been raised;
* To demand an explanation for the ‘deplorable’ delay in the publishing of the 13-country Interphone study looking at the EMF connection with brain tumors;
* Recognition that persons with Electrohypersensitivity are ‘disabled’ so as to assure them protection and equal opportunity under law.
* For member states to create maps of sources of exposure and make them available to citizens on the internet, including description of power line emissions and radiofrequency and microwave radiation;
* That Regional Antenna Plans be integrated into Urban Development Plans; and,
* That Member states create yearly reports on electromagnetic radiation, describing the sources and action
s that have been taken to better protect human health and the environment.
United States citizens should note that Wi-Max, or 24/7 wireless radiation, will be rolling out across America over the next 2+ years, blanketing citizens widely in microwave radiation. In addition, plans for new utility technologies with significant wireless and Broadband Over Power (BPL) components will also greatly increase microwave radiation exposure.
Compact fluorescent lighting also emits radiofrequency radiation and these are being promoted by our government instead of equally energy efficient LEDs. Citizens need to demand the proliferation of electromagnetic fields stop so we can bring some health sensibility to the unchecked growth of these harm-causing technologies.

These developments follow on the heels of the 522-16 vote by the full European Parliament last September on the EU Environment and Health Action Plan which called on the European Council to ‘amend its Recommendation 1999/519/EC in order to take into account the Member States’ best practices and thus to set stricter exposure limits for all equipment which emits electromagnetic fields in the frequencies between 0.1 MHz and 300 GHz’.
